Discovering the You in You

by Lora Starling | Feb 2, 2021 | ARTICLE, Logo effects

Who do you want to be? Who are you? Are you happy with your life? Want to live different life? There are a plethora of self-help courses at the moment, all eager to answer and supply us with solutions to a better life.

The virus seems to have created its own offspring online viral marketing offering self-improvement. Write your book (you have the time). Get fit (in your own home) with Zoom Zumba classes. Take control of your happiness (you still have the time) with meditations, yoga and coaching. Or explore and create the future you have always wanted. I was tempted and began to explore.

Joe Dispenza offered ‘redesigning your destiny’. Great title (wish I had thought of it), but the offer came too late, I was already committed. I also avoided the ongoing offer to write a book with BCB (Black Card Books) who told me they had found the ‘secret sauce’ with their ‘Rolls Royce layout’ and ‘Incredible programme’. I was advised ‘do not delay’ if I wanted to ‘launch myself as a 6-7 figure speaker in 12-24 months’ along with the ‘elite of the elite’ and their‘ proven structure’. That was easy to refuse, as sadly I had already fallen for their sales pitch and eye-watering costs a couple of years ago, so I am not sure why they were still targeting me.

It is obviously wise to choose carefully; there is some great stuff out there that has the potential to help us build better ways to live and work. Two new and extremely popular courses were presented, each focussed on being and expressing your true self. I was interested.

Tony Robbins promised to ‘Build your Brand’ (BYB). William Whitecloud offered ‘Create your Destiny’ (CYD). Since both were free, I was in.

Tony and his friends promised ‘In 5 days, you will learn how to build your brand, create an EPIC mastermind or course, how to market and get those sign ups coming! We’ll be pushing you to your limits by doing daily action challenges and we’re also giving away awesome prizes every single day (must sign up for challenge to win)!’ He encouraged participants to become creators and start their own businesses online by eventually subscribing to their online teaching platform.

William Whitecloud tempted me with ‘natural success’, the ability to ‘unleash my genius’ and live on my ‘highest creative frequency’. He used words like ‘magical notion’ and he signed off his emails with ‘love and magic, William’.

The dynamics and structures were completely different. I found one more effective for my style of working but both were worth it for the experience. The offers continue, more from Tony with a ‘New World New You Challenge’ and Commune, (onecommune.com), which hopes to bring well-being to a billion people worldwide, creating ‘The Summit of your Life’ stating that we cannot climb a mountain alone.

I felt, as I reviewed various online programmes, that the mountain was a perfect analogy. Some of the courses on offer felt like they could get us to the peak of the mountain, others seemed as if they could help us become the mountain. Many tried to sell the mountain to us. I like to think each of us is the mountain. When I went to Peru, I learned that the Inca religion uses the term ‘Apu’ to refer to mountains that have spirits that are alive and protect the area around them. We too are unique, like every mountain. We may be part of an ancient range or a single newly formed volcano arising from the sea floor. Either way we have the inherent ability to be visible and the capacity, and responsibility, to protect our surroundings.

If any of these online offers help us see our true mountain selves, then it is worth exploring them. If not now, then when? It is what I love about my work. When I work with my clients so they finally see themselves, we are then, and only then, able to design a logo that fully expresses this. And with this they can share the real ‘You in You’ with the rest of the world so others can truly see them. Without this depth, it is just another logo design.
