St Ronan’s Well

St Ronan’s well is a spa in Innerleithen, on the borders of Scotland. The mineral waters have been known for many years and visited by Robbie Burns in 1787 but the historic spa was built in the year 1827 and became a magnet for the Victorians in need of healing. These mineral waters were named after St Ronan, a monk who arrived around the 9th century and saved the local community from the devil by ‘cleikin’ (hooking) him around the leg with a crook to remove the evil. This legend is acted out every year in July at the St Ronan’s Border Games.

The water is always available to drink. It has a strong mineral taste. It claims to grant inner protection and restore minor imbalances that could render us vulnerable to outside ‘evil’ forces.

From the depths of the ground this well brings forth water that gives us ancient, blessed protection, helping us stay strong and reinforcing our personal, safe space from the inside out.
